How-to
Configuring Search
Turning search suggestions and synonym expansion on the public site on or off and defining synonym groups.
The search settings of the public site are on the Search tab of the Administration → Site settings screen. Save your changes with the Save button. A saved change is written to the audit log and takes effect on the site within 15 seconds.
Suggestions while typing
While the Suggestions while typing switch is on, a list of suggestions opens as soon as at least two letters are typed into the search box at the top of the site. The list contains publication titles, keywords and author names that start with what was typed. The list shows at most 8 suggestions. The switch is on by default. If you turn it off, the search box works without suggestions.
Expanding with synonyms
While the Expand with synonyms switch is on and the searched word is in a synonym group, publications that contain the other words of the group are found too. Publications that contain the searched word itself stay at the top of the list. The results page states which synonyms were searched as well. Expansion does not apply to phrases in quotation marks or to author names. The switch is on by default.
Synonym groups
- In the Synonym groups field, write one group per line.
- Separate the words or phrases of a group with commas, for example
makale, yazı, articleoraçık erişim, open access. - Press Save.
The counter next to the field shows how many groups you have defined. Upper and lower case and Turkish characters do not matter, so "Yazı" and "yazi" count as the same word. Groups do not change the stored publications. They only widen the search. When you delete a group and save, its expansion stops too.
Rules for groups
- A group has at least two and at most 20 different words or phrases.
- A word or phrase can be at most 100 characters long.
- You can define at most 500 groups.
- Words must be written in full to match. A group with
articledoes not expand a search forarticles. Add the inflected form to the group if needed.
If a line breaks a rule, nothing is saved and the error is shown with the line number. If you saved while another tab was open, the screen switches to the Search tab to show the error.
Exact phrase search
Visitors can search for an exact phrase by putting the words in quotation marks, for example
"open access policy". This search is always on and needs no setting. The visitor's side of search is described in
Searching the Public Site.
