System Health Screen

The Administration → System health screen shows the health of the application and the services it depends on, the background jobs and the e-mail outbox on three tabs. The Refresh button at the top right reads the information on the open tab again.

Health

Tile What it shows
Database Whether the database works, and the database revision
File storage Whether the file storage works and whether anonymous access to it is closed
Virus scanner Whether the virus scanner works, and how it runs
E-mail Whether sending is on or off, the server, the source of the settings and the number of waiting or failed e-mails

Below the tiles are these cards.

  • The Job queue card counts the jobs by status. Pressing a number opens the Background jobs tab with that status. If jobs are waiting in the queue, the card says how long the oldest job has been waiting.
  • The Application version card shows the application version, the database revision, the environment and the type of file storage.
  • The Scheduled tasks table shows the last run time and the result of each scheduled task. If a task failed, the error text appears too.
  • The Additional checks card shows the embargo and licence check. It counts expired embargoes, expired licences, open records without a licence and embargoes that end within 30 days.

Background jobs

Status Meaning
Queued The job is waiting for its run time.
Running The job is running now.
Done The job has finished. Finished jobs are removed from the list after 14 days.
Failed (will retry) The job failed or was interrupted, and will be retried at growing intervals.
Stopped The job stopped after its last attempt, failed with an error that retrying cannot fix, or an administrator cancelled it.
Column What it shows
# The job's number
Job type The type of job, for example send_email or ops_alert
Status The job's status
Attempts The number of attempts made and allowed
Run at When the job will run or when it finished
Last error The error text of the last attempt

Long jobs do not hold up short ones. Only one DergiPark harvest or TR Dizin refresh job runs at a time, and short jobs such as e-mails and virus scans still run at once.

If the server stops unexpectedly, the job running on it is interrupted. Such a job is retried a few minutes later, and the Last error column shows worker lost while running. Each interrupted run counts as an attempt. A job that has used up its attempts moves to Stopped. A job that cannot finish while the server restarts as planned goes back to the queue without counting the attempt.

The Retry button appears on failed and stopped jobs. It resets the number of attempts and puts the job back in the queue. If the same job is already waiting in the queue or running, the button does not queue a stopped job a second time, and the screen says so. The Cancel button appears on queued and failed jobs. Retries and cancellations are written to the audit log. In error texts, e-mail addresses, passwords and keys are masked, while the type of the error stays visible.

E-mail outbox

The note at the top of the tab says whether e-mail sending is on or off. If you have permission to manage the site settings, the E-mail settings link in the note opens the e-mail settings.

Status Meaning
Pending The e-mail is waiting to be sent.
Sent The e-mail has left the server.
Failed Sending failed, and the row shows the error text.
Not sent (in outbox) The e-mail was created while sending was off and is waiting in the outbox.

The rows show the e-mail's subject and template code, the recipient, the status and the date. The View content button shows the e-mail's recipient, subject, template and text, and viewing it is written to the audit log. The Resend button appears on e-mails that were not sent and puts the e-mail back in the queue.

If the mail server does not answer or reports a temporary error, the e-mail is retried by itself at growing intervals for about an hour. The same happens when the server does not accept the user name, the password or the sender address. That is a setting to fix, and if it is fixed within that hour the waiting e-mails go out by themselves. If the server refuses the recipient or the e-mail itself for good, the e-mail is not retried. A final refusal has a reply code that starts with 5, and the code shows in the row's error text. Once you have fixed the cause, send the e-mail again with the Resend button.

The steps of the daily check are in Monitoring System Health.
